Faith Link

The main mission of a true, New Testament church is evangelism. That is what passages like Matthew 28:18-20 and Acts 1:8, to name only a couple, teach us. The Founder of our institution – the Lord Jesus Christ – has established our mission statement: go, make disciples of all nations, baptize the converted, and teach them the Scripture so that they may help in accomplishing the mission. All of this is accomplished for the glory of God, and by the power of the Holy Spirit.

The Rodgers Baptist Church has been placed by God in Garland, TX to link our faith to this community. We have church members in San Miguel de Allende and Queretaro, Mexico, Fairbanks, AK, the Kingdom of Thailand, Melbourne, Australia, Cleveland, OH, and western Tennessee who are evangelizing those communities, and seeking to establish local, New Testament, Baptist churches in them. We support missionaries, of like mind and faith, who are spread across this country and the globe to evangelize the people to whom God has called them. Why? Because the supreme mission of Rodgers Baptist Church, and of every true church, is what we are focusing on this month: faith link…connecting our faith with an unsaved world. Every church member has been called to be an instrument in accomplishing this mission!

To say that our main mission is evangelism is the same as saying our main mission is to glorify God. The two are not contradictory; they are not two distinct statements but are one in the same. This is because nothing so much glorifies God as His gracious and merciful redemption of hell-bound sinners! We are confident of this based on the strength of passages such as 2 Peter 3:9, 1 Timothy 2:3-4, John 3:16-17, Luke 19:10, and Mark 10:45, to name just a few.

Our desire as a church is to love, learn, and live so as to connect our faith to others, because God is glorified every time an unbeliever is saved by His amazing grace. Therefore, the church and the church member who desires to glorify God must share God’s love for and desire to “rescue the perishing, care for the dying…tell them of Jesus the mighty to save” (Fanny Crosby, Rescue the Perishing). Since we are “ambassadors for Christ” (2 Corinthians 5:20), we are to carry on His mission! Indeed, Jesus prayed to the Father in John 17:18, “As thou hast sent me into the world, even so have I also sent them into the world.”

Our Lord has told us what is expected of us, and He has enabled us to accomplish that expectation. We are enabled by…

  • Christ’s Power (Matthew 28:18, Acts 1:8) All the resources of Christ are at our disposal as we seek to link our faith to our lost world. What an encouragement that is! Through Christ we do not lack any spiritual resource. Are we, as a church, busy accomplishing the main mission? We have no excuse.
  • Christ’s Plan (Matthew 28:19-20a; Mark 16:15) The plan is simple. Because it is simple does not make it easy, but it does mean it is not complicated. We are to be going to our lost world, winning them through the power of the Gospel, baptizing them in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, and teaching them the whole counsel of God.
  • Christ’s Promise (Matthew 28:20b) This promise is personal – “I am with you” and continual – “I am with you alway even unto the end of the world.”

We have our Lord’s power, plan, and promise to enable us to connect our faith to our lost world. Therefore, let us go and make this faith link!
