Zechariah 9:12, “Turn you to the strong hold, ye prisoners of hope: even to day do I declare that I will render double unto thee;”
Have you ever faced deep discouragement, where counting your troubles felt easier than recalling your blessings? The prophet Zechariah ministered to God’s people during just such a time. They were struggling, feeling overwhelmed by their circumstances. But into this weariness, God sends a powerful message. He calls His people, “prisoners of hope.” They were indeed “prisoners” – captive to their struggles and past mistakes. Yet, because of God’s faithful promise, they were not prisoners of despair, but “prisoners of hope.” Their hope was not in their situation, but in the unwavering character and word of their God.
He urges them: “Return to the strong hold.” This stronghold is not just a physical fortress, but a spiritual one in the LORD Himself. It’s a call to find refuge and encouragement not in their own strength, but in God’s immutable promises. This echoes the profound truth in James 4:8 ”Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you.” When we, as prisoners of hope, turn back to our Heavenly Father, acknowledging our need and seeking His presence, He meets us there. He is our strong hold – our secure place of refuge, peace, and renewed strength. He promises to “render double unto thee,” giving abundant blessing for our past troubles.
So, if you’re feeling discouraged today, remember this: You are a prisoner of hope. Your hope is anchored in God’s unfailing promises. Draw near to Him, and He will draw near to you, becoming your unshakeable stronghold.
