The Majesty and Wisdom of God

Psalm 145:3, “Great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised; and His greatness is unsearchable.”

Today’s verse presents us with an opportunity to pause over a simple line of awesome truth. The psalmist has stacked superlative on superlative (great, greatly praised, unsearchable greatness) because our ordinary speech and mental capabilities collapse before the sheer scale of God’s majesty. Creation itself is His stage: galaxies spun from breath, oceans cupped in His palm, snow and hail kept in His “storehouses” until the appointed day (Job 38:22). Praise God that the powerful truth of Scripture never lets glorious grandeur drift into cold abstraction. The Bible weds majesty to perfect wisdom. “Oh, the depth of the riches and the wisdom and the knowledge of God! How unsearchable his judgments and untraceable his ways!” (Rom. 11:33). That wisdom flowers most brightly at the cross. What seemed like the ruin of righteousness became, by divine design, the doorway of redemption. Therefore, “we preach Christ crucified, a stumbling block to the Jews and foolishness to the Gentiles. Yet to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ is the power of God and the wisdom of God,” (1 Cor. 1:23-24). We worship a King whose brilliance turns darkness into dawn and whose counsels stand when every human scheme has failed. Our fitting response is awestruck wonder and exhilarating humility. Like Job (40:3-5), I place a hand over my mouth, and like Paul I want to erupt in praise, trusting that the God who numbers the stars also orders every step of those who fear Him. To behold such majesty joined to such wisdom is to find both trembling and rest for the soul.
