Justice in Work Boots
Psalm 82:3-4, “Defend the poor and fatherless: do justice to the afflicted and needy. Deliver the poor and needy: rid them out of the hand of the wicked.”
The psalmist pulls back the curtain on God’s courtroom. Earthly “gods” (vv. 1, 6)—leaders, judges, influencers—stand before the Judge of all time and all people. His charge is stunningly clear. Delegated authority is to be used for the protection of those who have none. The weak, fatherless, and destitute are not statistics to Yahweh. They are persons whose cries reach His throne. To ignore them is to oppose the very character of the God who defends them.
Christ fulfilled this charge perfectly. He took little children in His arms, touched lepers, and announced good news to the poor. At the cross He became the ultimate Advocate, rescuing us sinners (every one of us are spiritually helpless) from the grip of sin and death. Now, as believers who are indwelt by His Spirit, we are expected to echo heaven’s verdict in practical ways. Care for the needy. Speak for the voiceless. Be present for the lonely. Opening doors for the marginalized. Work to do that which is equitable, honest, and fair. Step up to foster, adopt, and mentor. Ask yourself today: “Where has God given me leverage that I could use as a lifeline for someone on the edges?” Justice is not an abstract virtue but is love that wears work boots. When we lift the weak, we honor the Judge who once stooped to lift us. Speak and exemplify the gospel of Jesus Christ.
