Better Than a Thousand
Psalm 84:10–12, “For a day in thy courts is better than a thousand. I had rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God, than to dwell in the tents of wickedness. For the LORD God is a sun and shield: the LORD will give grace and glory: no good thing will he withhold from them that walk uprightly. O LORD of hosts, blessed is the man that trusteth in thee.”
Psalm 84 is filled with longing for the presence and house of God.
Earlier the Psalmist says, “My soul longeth, yea, even fainteth for the courts of the LORD.” By the time we reach verse 10, we understand why he can say that one day in God’s courts is better than a thousand anywhere else.
That is quite a statement.
One day with God is better than a thousand spent pursuing everything this world promises.
The Psalmist would rather stand at the door of God’s house than have a comfortable place among the wicked.
Why?
Because he had learned where true blessing is found.
“The LORD God is a sun and shield.”
He gives light for the road and protection along the way.
“The LORD will give grace and glory.”
Everything we truly need comes from Him.
And then the Psalm ends with this simple declaration:
“Blessed is the man that trusteth in thee.”
We live in a world constantly telling us that fulfillment can be found somewhere else. More money. More success. More recognition. More comfort.
But the Psalmist had reached his conclusion.
There is nowhere better than near the LORD.
As we gather tomorrow with the people of God, may we never treat worship as simply another appointment on our calendar. What a privilege it is to come together, open His Word, lift our voices, and worship the One who is our sun and our shield.
Act Today: Read all of Psalm 84. Notice every expression of longing for God and His house. Then prepare your heart for worship tomorrow, thanking the LORD for the privilege of gathering with His people.
