A Psalm for Saturday, September 26, 2026

From Whence Cometh My Help?

Psalm 121:1–4, “I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help. My help cometh from the LORD, which made heaven and earth. He will not suffer thy foot to be moved: He that keepeth thee will not slumber. Behold, He that keepeth Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep.”

Psalm 121 is one of the Songs of Degrees, Psalms connected with the journey of worshippers going up toward Jerusalem.

As the traveler looked toward the hills ahead, there was an important question:
Where does my help come from?

The answer comes immediately.
“My help cometh from the LORD.”

Not from the hills.

Not from the traveler’s own strength.

Not from favorable circumstances.

From the LORD.

And then the Psalm reminds us exactly who this LORD is:

He is the One “which made heaven and earth.”

The God who watches over us is the Creator of everything we can see.

And unlike us, He never becomes tired.

“He that keepeth thee will not slumber.”

We sleep because we must. Our bodies eventually demand rest. Our attention wanders. Our strength has limits.

God’s does not.

There is never a moment when the LORD stops being God.

There is never an hour when He becomes distracted.

There is never a night when He falls asleep and leaves His people unattended.

The remainder of Psalm 121 repeats one beautiful truth again and again:

The LORD keeps His people.

So when we do not know what lies ahead, we can lift our eyes higher than the trouble in front of us.

Our help comes from the LORD.

Act Today: Read all of Psalm 121 and notice how many times the Psalm speaks of the LORD keeping or preserving His people. Whatever journey lies ahead of you, begin it with this truth: “My help cometh from the LORD, which made heaven and earth.”
