What to Expect in Mexico: Practical Insights

Climate

July in Mexico City is part of the rainy season. Expect pleasant temperatures during the day (typically mid-70s to low-80s) but be prepared for afternoon showers. It’s a good idea to pack light layers and a rain jacket or umbrella.

Altitude

Mexico City is at a high altitude (over 7,300 feet). Some people may experience mild effects like shortness of breath or fatigue initially. Stay hydrated, take it easy the first day, and avoid overexertion.

Culture

Mexican culture is rich, vibrant, and incredibly hospitable. The people are generally warm and welcoming. We will be interacting closely with the children and local church members, which is a beautiful part of the experience.

Food

Mexican cuisine is world-renowned and incredibly diverse. Be adventurous! While we’ll be eating in trusted establishments, it's always wise to drink bottled water.

Safety

As with any international travel, we will take precautions. We will primarily travel as a group via charter bus and stick to our planned itinerary. Your safety is our priority.

Additional Information & Points of Interest

Exchange Rate
Based on our cost sheet, an approximate exchange rate is 1 USD = 17 Mexican Pesos. It's advisable to carry some pesos for small purchases, though many places accept credit cards. As we get closer we will discuss the best ways to exchange money.
National Anthropology Museum (Museo Nacional de Antropología)
Located in Chapultepec Park, this is one of the most impressive museums in the world. It houses an extraordinary collection of pre-Hispanic artifacts from Mexico's diverse cultures, including the iconic Aztec calendar stone. It's a profound journey through Mexico's ancient history and indigenous heritage.
The Pyramids of Teotihuacan (Pyramid del Sol)
Just north of Mexico City, Teotihuacan was one of the largest and most powerful cities in ancient Mesoamerica. You'll have the opportunity to explore this vast archaeological site, including the immense Pyramid of the Sun and the Pyramid of the Moon, offering breathtaking views and a deep sense of history.
Gran Hotel Ciudad de México (The "Gran National Hotel")
While our itinerary mentions "Gran Teocali" for breakfast near the pyramids, the Gran Hotel Ciudad de México (often affectionately referred to as the "Gran Hotel" or a "National" treasure) is a truly iconic landmark in Mexico City. Located in the historic Zócalo, it's famous for its stunning Art Nouveau architecture, elaborate stained-glass ceiling, and opulent interior. It's a magnificent example of historical Mexican luxury and a must-see, even if only from the outside.
