Numbering Our Days
Psalm 90:10–12, “The days of our years are threescore years and ten; and if by reason of strength they be fourscore years, yet is their strength labour and sorrow; for it is soon cut off, and we fly away. Who knoweth the power of thine anger? even according to thy fear, so is thy wrath. So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom.”
Psalm 90 reminds us of something we do not always like to think about:
Our time here is limited.
Moses contrasts the everlasting nature of God with the shortness of human life. Earlier he declares, “From everlasting to everlasting, thou art God.” Generations come and go, but God remains.
Then Moses looks at the years we are given and prays:
“So teach us to number our days.”
He is not asking God to teach him mathematics.
He is asking for wisdom to understand the value of the time God has given him.
We often live as though there will always be another opportunity.
Another day to obey.
Another day to forgive.
Another day to serve.
Another day to tell someone we love them.
Another day to share Christ.
But our days are a gift from God, and none of us knows how many remain.
Numbering our days does not mean living in fear of death. It means living wisely because life matters.
We cannot change yesterday, and tomorrow has not been promised to us.
But God has given us today.
So use it well.
Love people today.
Serve God today.
Obey Him today.
Do not waste the gift you are holding while wishing for one you have not yet been given.
Act Today: Ask the LORD, “What would wisdom have me do with today?” Then act on the answer. Make the call, offer the forgiveness, serve someone, share Christ, or obey whatever God has already placed before you.
