Whom Shall I Fear?

Psalm 27:1–3,  “The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the LORD is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid? When the wicked, even mine enemies and my foes, came upon me to eat up my flesh, they stumbled and fell. Though an host should encamp against me, my heart shall not fear: though war should rise against me, in this will I be confident.”

David was not pretending that his enemies did not exist. He knew what it was like to be opposed, threatened, and surrounded.

Yet David’s confidence was not found in his own courage. It was found in the LORD.

When the way was dark, the LORD was his light.

When danger came near, the LORD was his salvation.

When his own strength was not enough, the LORD was the strength of his life.

Fear asks, “What if everything goes wrong?”

Faith answers, “The LORD is still my light, my salvation, and my strength.”

David could face an army without allowing fear to rule his heart because he knew that no enemy was greater than his God. His circumstances were real, but so was the faithfulness of the LORD.

Faith does not mean that we never feel afraid. It means that when fear comes, we remember who God is. We do not place our confidence in ourselves, our plans, or our ability to control what happens next.

We place our confidence in the LORD.

Act Today: Name the fear that has been weighing upon your heart. Bring it honestly before the LORD, and then read Psalm 27:1 aloud as a declaration of where your confidence rests.
