Time to Choose

1 Kings 18:21, “And Elijah came unto all the people, and said, How long halt ye between two opinions? if the LORD be God, follow Him: but if Baal, then follow him. And the people answered him not a word.”

The context of today’s verse is Elijah’s confrontation with wicked King Ahab and the false prophets of Baal on Mount Carmel. This showdown was public, dramatic, and prophetic. The contest demonstrated God’s supremacy over every other god. Elijah’s prayer, not theatrical gesture, underscores dependence on the LORD. The outcome exposed the wavering and hard-heartedness of many in Israel.

Elijah models direct prophetic confrontation with false idols and teaching, and prayerful dependence on God and His truth. The prophet’s prayer was simple, and God’s answer was complete. He powerfully revealed Himself and as the only One who should be honored, worshipped, and served. We do that through repentant faith, which is not simply a one-time event by a pattern of living. The spectacle on Carmel pointed to God’s sovereign control. The proclamation of His truth is vital at all times, especially when deception reigns.

Pastor David Pitman says that, “Truth without love leads no one, and love without truth leads nowhere”. In Colossians 3 we are commanded to do all things as unto the LORD.  All means all and that’s all that “all” means! When (not if) confrontation arises, speak truth lovingly and courageously. In fact, withholding truth is unloving. Speak biblical truth in a humble and clear way, for God’s glory which is always for the good of others. Pray for humility, clarity, and God’s action rather than personal victory.

Expect mixed results. We live a society that is in direct opposition to God. If we stand for the LORD, we will encounter resistance, perhaps even persecution. Some will respond with repentant faith, others will be fickle or hard-hearted or indifferent or antagonistic. Maintain humility and faithfulness to the LORD. Ask yourself, “Where do I need to speak truth in love this week?” Remember Deuteronomy 31:6 “Be strong and of a good courage, fear not, nor be afraid of them: for the LORD thy God, He it is that doth go with thee; He will not fail thee, nor forsake thee.” Prayer: Lord, make me faithful and bold in truth, humble in spirit, and dependent upon You for the fruit of my witness. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
