Drink from Your Own Well

Proverbs 5:15-19, “Drink waters out of thine own cistern, and running waters out of thine own well. Let thy fountains be dispersed abroad, and rivers of waters in the streets. Let them be only thine own, and not strangers’ with thee. Let thy fountain be blessed: and rejoice with the wife of thy youth. Let her be as the loving hind and pleasant roe; let her breasts satisfy thee at all times; and be thou ravished always with her love.”

Solomon uses water imagery to celebrate marital faithfulness. A cistern gathers life-giving water. A spring refreshes the one who owns it. When a husband and wife protect their intimacy, they drink from a clean, private source. Seeking forbidden wells promises excitement but delivers drought. Scattering affection across strangers drains the soul and fractures the home. God’s design for marriage is not oppressive but is protective and provides a sanctuary where love deepens over time. You do not need outside water when God has given you a fountain. Faithfulness guards joy.

The New Covenant reveals this pattern. Christ loved His bride, the church, and gave Himself for her. In return, she remains devoted to Him alone. When you honor your wedding covenant, you reflect Christ’s covenant love. Marital monogamy, fidelity to your spouse, is not a burden, it is the path to enduring refreshment. The joy of marriage does not depend on youthfulness. Marriage grows stronger when both spouses keep their springs reserved for each other and committed to one another. That enables the joy to deepen and strengthen over time. Guard the garden. Drink deeply. Let the water stay within the walls God built.
