Better Than Gold
Proverbs 3:13-20, “Happy is the man that findeth wisdom, and the man that getteth understanding. For the merchandise of it is better than the merchandise of silver, and the gain thereof than fine gold. She is more precious than rubies: and all the things thou canst desire are not to be compared unto her. Length of days is in her right hand; and in her left hand riches and honor. Her ways are ways of pleasantness, and all her paths are peace. She is a tree of life to them that lay hold upon her: and happy is everyone that retaineth her. The LORD by wisdom hath founded the earth; by understanding hath He established the heavens. By His knowledge the depths are broken up, and the clouds drop down the dew.”
Wisdom is not a commodity. Wisdom (personified as “her” in today’s text) is a covenant gift from the Holy Spirit. The passage celebrates her value over silver, precious stones, and long life. In the New Covenant, Jesus is the embodiment of divine wisdom. By the Spirit’s power, believers receive insight that should transform their decision-making, relationships, and worship.
Worldly knowledge accumulates data. Biblical wisdom cultivates character. It plants trees of life in our lives and makes our foundations stable through faithful living. When we pursue Christ above profit, status, or comfort, we inherit eternal stability. The Spirit writes God’s Law on our hearts, guiding us toward choices that outlive our earthly tenure. Wisdom’s reward is not merely earthly success but is deep communion with the Maker and a legacy that points others to the Savior. Pursue wisdom daily and watch God’s kingdom thrive through you.
