Proverbs 7:9, “In the twilight, in the evening, in the black and dark night:”

Avoid sin in your life by being determined to walk in light with children of the light, rather than in darkness with children of the darkness. The subject of light versus darkness permeates the New Testament. A brief survey includes the following passages:

  • John 1:1-14: Jesus is the Light of the world which shines in the darkness.
  • John 3:18-21: The wicked hate the light because it exposes their works.
  • 2 Corinthians 6:14-18: There exists a distinction between the light and darkness. Go figure.
  • Ephesians 6:12: Our enemies are not flesh and blood. They are “the rulers of the darkness of this world.”
  • Colossians 1:13: Through Christ, believers have been delivered from the domain of darkness and transferred to the kingdom of the Son.
  • 1 Thessalonians 5:4-8: Another reference to the distinction that should exist between the children of light and those of the darkness.

Here is what 1 John 1:5-7 said about walking in the light: “This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. If we say that we have fellowship with him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth: But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.”

If we claim to have fellowship with Christ, but we are always walking in the darkness we are lying. That is not a personal opinion. That is the plain truth of Scripture, and, admittedly, that does not always go down easy. To continually walk in darkness but claim to have fellowship with the Light is to lie, not just to others, but more importantly to yourself and to God. To be wise is to walk towards the light, and with the children of the light. We do this by being born again, being submissive to the Spirit, and being increasingly saturated with the Word.
