A Clean Heart Before God

Psalm 24:3–6, “Who shall ascend into the hill of the LORD? or who shall stand in His holy place? He that hath clean hands, and a pure heart; who hath not lifted up his soul unto vanity, nor sworn deceitfully. He shall receive the blessing from the LORD, and righteousness from the God of his salvation. This is the generation of them that seek Him, that seek Thy face, O Jacob. Selah.”

Psalm 24 begins by reminding us that “the earth is the LORD’S, and the fulness thereof.” Everything belongs to Him. He is Creator, King, and Lord over all.

Then David asks an important question: Who can stand in His presence?

The answer reminds us that worship is about more than what happens on the outside.

Clean hands and a pure heart.

Our hands speak of what we do. Our heart speaks of who we are when no one else is looking.

It is possible to say the right things, sing the right songs, sit in the right pew, and still allow something in our heart that does not belong there. God is not interested in outward religion that hides inward sin.

He wants us to seek Him sincerely.

That does not mean we come before God claiming that we have never sinned. We come honestly, recognizing our need for His cleansing and righteousness. The same passage that calls for clean hands and a pure heart points us to “the God of his salvation.”

Before we lift our hands in worship, we should be willing to let God examine our hearts.

Act Today: Ask the LORD to search your heart today. If He brings something to mind that needs to be confessed or made right, do not ignore it. Deal with it honestly before Him.
