Trust, Delight, and Commit

Psalm 37:3–7, “Trust in the LORD, and do good; so shalt thou dwell in the land, and verily thou shalt be fed. Delight thyself also in the LORD; and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart. Commit thy way unto the LORD; trust also in him; and he shall bring it to pass. And he shall bring forth thy righteousness as the light, and thy judgment as the noonday. Rest in the LORD, and wait patiently for him: fret not thyself because of him who prospereth in his way, because of the man who bringeth wicked devices to pass.”

Psalm 37 begins with a command that can be difficult to obey: “Fret not thyself.”

David was looking at wicked people who seemed to prosper while those trying to live rightly struggled. We understand that frustration. Sometimes we look around and wonder why doing the right thing seems harder while others appear to succeed without regard for God.

David’s answer is not to watch them more closely.

It is to turn our attention back to the LORD.

Trust in the LORD.
Delight thyself in the LORD.
Commit thy way unto the LORD.
Rest in the LORD.
Wait patiently for Him.

That is a pretty good description of the life of faith.

Verse 4 is sometimes treated as though God promises to give us everything we happen to want. But notice the order: “Delight thyself also in the LORD.” As we delight in Him, He shapes our desires. We begin wanting what He wants.

Then we commit our way to Him.

We do not have to understand everything God is doing before we trust Him. We simply need to know that He is faithful.

So do not spend today measuring your life against someone else’s.

Trust Him. Do good. Delight in Him. Commit your way to Him.

And then rest.

Act Today: Identify one situation you have been trying to control or constantly worrying over. Tell the LORD, “I commit this way unto You.” Then faithfully do what you know is right and trust Him with what happens next.
