The Word Makes All the Difference

2 Kings 23:2, “And the king went up into the house of the LORD , and all the men of Judah and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem with him, and the priests, and the prophets, and all the people, both small and great: and he read in their ears all the words of the book of the covenant which was found in the house of the LORD.”

In 2 Kings 22 young Josiah becomes king and discovers the Book of the Law IN THE TEMPLE during temple repairs. Confronted by Scripture, he repents and leads a national revival. Idols are removed. Hearts are renewed, as covenant practices are restored. 2 Kings 22 and 23 show how Scripture convicts us and lead to revival when met with humble, sincere obedience.

The discovery of the Book catalyzed national repentance because Scripture is the agent of life and renewal when people have eyes to see and ears to hear. Josiah’s example shows the power of God’s Word to bring conviction and corporate change. Repentance changes the life of the repentant and the direction of families, churches, even nations. Leaders must submit to Scripture and lead corrective action. However, for this to happen, the Word of God must be read and obeyed. Heard and heeded.

A pastor was invited for a family dinner. After dinner they noticed they were missing a silver spoon from the set and assumed the pastor had taken it! Weeks passed but the spoon was not found. After church service one day they confronted him about the spoon.  He smiled and asked to come for another visit to discuss the matter. While he was there, he confessed to hiding the family’s silver spoon inside the family Bible, the one prominently displayed during his visit.  The entire family was sorely convicted. Weeks had gone by and no one in the house had read the Bible during that time.

Ask yourself, “When was the last time I meditated on the Word of God? What Scripture conviction have I been avoiding?” Then establish a pattern of Scriptural saturation. If a passage exposes a sin in family, church, or life, do not ignore it—act. Personal repentance should lead to corrective steps and practical actions. If you are a leader, openly acknowledge error and lead by Scripture—confession, structural change, and renewed practice.

Prayer: Lord, let Your Word have its full effect—convict, awaken, and lead me to repentance and faithful reform. For the glory of Jesus and in His name. Amen.

Today’s devotion has been written by Bro. Joshua Soliz, a member of Rodgers Baptist Church who is a LIFE Group teacher and regular preacher here.
