THE WAY HAS A NAME
John 14:6 “Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.”
Thomas asked what many still ask. Jesus had spoken of going to the Father’s house. Thomas said, “Lord, we know not whither thou goest; and how can we know the way?” The Lord did not give him a list of roads. He gave him a name.
He did not say, “I will show you a way.” He said, “I am the way.” That changes everything. A guide can point and then leave. A map can tear. A church can fail you. Jesus does not point down a path and step aside. He is the path.
J. Vernon McGee used to say Christ is not a way-shower. He IS the Way. That is still the gospel in a sentence. You are not saved by finding the right building, the right feeling, or the right record. You are saved by coming to a Person (Jesus Christ) & receiving the gift only He can give.
The last half of the verse is just as necessary as the first. “No man cometh unto the Father, but by me.” Heaven is the Father’s house, but the house has one door. That is not unkind. It is the Grace of a God who actually opened the door. That is not unkind. Jesus is the only way because only a perfect sacrifice could atone for our sins. God alone is perfect. Anything less will not do. His holiness shows us the truth about our sin. His love shows us the remedy. Both meet in His Son.
The Holy Spirit shows us this same way. He does not glorify a method. He glorifies Christ. When a sinner is lost, the Spirit does not first make him religious. He shows him Jesus. When a saint is confused, the Spirit does not first give him a new program. He shows him Jesus again.
This is how we show the way. We talk about Christ until people see that the question is not “Which path do I prefer?” but “Will I come to Him?” The world is full of roads that seem right. Proverbs 14:12 says, “There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death.” Jesus is the living exception. He is the way.
