A Very Present Help
Psalm 46:1–3, “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore will not we fear, though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea; Though the waters thereof roar and be troubled, though the mountains shake with the swelling thereof. Selah.”
Psalm 46 does not describe a small problem.
The earth is moved. Mountains fall into the sea. Waters roar. Everything that seemed permanent and dependable suddenly appears unstable.
And right in the middle of it all stands one unchanging truth:
“God is our refuge and strength.”
The Psalm does not say that God is only nearby when life is peaceful. It says He is “a very present help in trouble.”
We often look for security in things that can change. Jobs change. Finances change. Relationships change. Health changes. Plans change. The world around us can change faster than we ever expected.
But God does not.
That is why the Psalmist can say, “Therefore will not we fear.”
Not because there is nothing frightening happening.
Not because the storm is imaginary.
But because God is greater than everything that is shaking around us.
A refuge is where we run when danger comes. Strength is what sustains us when ours is gone. And God promises to be both.
When everything else feels uncertain, He remains sure.
Act Today: Think of the situation in your life that feels the most unstable. Instead of rehearsing everything that could go wrong, remind yourself of what cannot change: God is your refuge, your strength, and your very present help.
