The Commandment’s Guard

Proverbs 6:20-23, “My son, keep thy father’s commandment, and forsake not the law of thy mother: Bind them continually upon thine heart, and tie them about thy neck. When thou goest, it shall lead thee; when thou sleepest, it shall keep thee; and when thou awakest, it shall talk with thee. For the commandment is a lamp; and the law is light; and reproofs of instruction are the way of life:”

God’s instruction is not a shackle but is a lantern. Solomon pictures parental wisdom tied close to the chest, guiding every step. Walking through dark streets requires constant illumination. Likewise, some of the most helpful times of quiet reflection in my life has happened as a lay down to rest or sleep. “Waking” from those moments often launch fresh conversations with truth. The commandment leads, guards, and speaks. It keeps us from fatal errors and gently corrects wrong turns. Jesus fulfilled the Father’s commands perfectly, yet He sent the Spirit to make God’s law a living guide for believers. Discipline from Scripture is not cruelty. It is the path of life. The rebuke that stings saves the foot from the cliff. The instruction that feels heavy becomes the compass that saves your soul. Keep God’s Word close. Let it wake you, walk with you, guard your mind, and even direct your dreams. When the world’s lights flicker, the lamp of the Lord never dims.
