Proverbs 16:18, “Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall.”
This is a verse that nearly every Christian can quote (even if we often transpose “destruction” and “fall”), but not all of us regard. Bible commentator William Barclay said, “Pride is the ground in which all the other sins grow, and the parent from which all the other sins come.” To be rid of this poisonous fruit we must attack the dangerous root. That is a painful thing to do, and rarely, if ever, easy thing to do. Trust the Lord Jesus’ example and teaching. Put pride to death by sacrificially serving others for the gospel’s sake and God’s glory (John 13:1-17; Philippians 2:1-18).
