Forget Not All His Benefits
Psalm 103:1–5, “Bless the LORD, O my soul: and all that is within me, bless His holy name. Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all His benefits: Who forgiveth all thine iniquities; who healeth all thy diseases; Who redeemeth thy life from destruction; who crowneth thee with lovingkindness and tender mercies; Who satisfieth thy mouth with good things; so that thy youth is renewed like the eagle’s.”
Sometimes we need to remind ourselves to remember.
That is exactly what David does in Psalm 103.
“Bless the LORD, O my soul.”
David is speaking to his own heart. Then he gives himself this command:
“Forget not all His benefits.”
We are often very good at remembering what went wrong.
We remember the prayer that has not yet been answered. We remember the disappointment. We remember what someone said. We remember what we hoped would happen but did not.
Yet how easily we forget the faithfulness of God.
So David begins remembering.
He forgives.
He heals.
He redeems.
He crowns us with lovingkindness and tender mercies.
He satisfies.
And that list continues throughout the rest of Psalm 103.
David is not teaching us to ignore hardship. He is teaching us not to allow hardship to make us forget who God has been.
Gratitude grows when we deliberately remember.
Look back over your life. There were prayers you once prayed that God has already answered. There were burdens you thought you could never carry that He gave you strength to bear. There were moments when you did not know what would happen next, and somehow His mercy met you there.
Do not forget.
The same God who was faithful yesterday is worthy of your praise today.
Act Today: Read all of Psalm 103 and make your own list of the LORD’s benefits. Write down at least three specific ways God has shown His goodness, mercy, or faithfulness in your life, and thank Him for each one.
