Folly’s Fatal Trap

Proverbs 9:16-18, “Whoso is simple, let him turn in hither: and as for him that wanteth understanding, she saith to him, Stolen waters are sweet, and bread eaten in secret is pleasant. But he knoweth not that the dead are there; and that her guests are in the depths of hell.”

“The foolish woman” (Pro. 9:13) is loud and foolish and knows nothing. She sits at the door of her house, calling out to the simple and those who lack sense. But those (the simple and senseless) do not know that the dead are there, that her guests are in the depths of Sheol. Folly also invites. She sounds fun, harmless, and exciting. She promises sweet water and secret bread, quick pleasure without accountability, but the door leads to a graveyard. Sin is not wrong because God is restrictive. It is wrong because it is lethal. Christ entered humanity to rescue humanity from sins secret and public. He broke the illusion. Through His Spirit, believers gain sight to see the corpses behind the invitation. When temptation whispers “sweet,” remember it ends in death. Do not taste what destroys. Walk past the door. Choose the life that outlasts the grave.

Act today: When a “sweet but secret” temptation arises today, speak aloud: “This leads to death.” Repent. Confess and forsake sinful thoughts, words, and behaviors. Turn to God and away from temptation, and replace the moment with prayer and accountability.
