The Grace of Timely Good

Proverbs 3:27-29, “Withhold not good from them to whom it is due, when it is in the power of thine hand to do it. Say not unto thy neighbor, Go, and come again, and to morrow I will give; when thou hast it by thee. Devise not evil against thy neighbor, seeing he dwelleth securely by thee.”

Wisdom demands immediate mercy. Delayed generosity becomes withheld generosity. God calls us to act when the opportunity is at hand, reflecting His own prompt kindness toward us in Christ. Jesus didn’t say, “Wait until heaven, and I’ll rescue you.” He came while we were still weak, bearing our sin and securing our peace. As those grafted into His covenant, we are called to imitate His readiness. Withholding good, making empty promises, or nursing quiet malice fractures community and grieves the Spirit. Instead, we must pursue peace, bless our neighbors, and let our hands reflect God’s open heart. True holiness shows up early, stays late, and never calculates what it costs to love well.

Act today: Think of one person in need, a practical, emotional, or financial burden. Act today. Deliver what you can, keep your word, and pray for grace to love your neighbor as Christ loves you.
