A New Song from the Pit
Psalm 40:1–3, “I waited patiently for the LORD; and He inclined unto me, and heard my cry. He brought me up also out of an horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock, and established my goings. And He hath put a new song in my mouth, even praise unto our God: many shall see it, and fear, and shall trust in the LORD.”
Waiting is difficult.
We pray, but nothing seems to change. We ask God for direction, but the answer does not come when we expect it. We know He is faithful, yet sometimes we wonder how long we will have to wait.
David knew that feeling.
“I waited patiently for the LORD.”
But David was not waiting for nothing. The LORD heard his cry.
God brought him out of the pit, set his feet upon a rock, established his steps, and then did something I especially love:
“He hath put a new song in my mouth.”
The song came after the pit.
Sometimes the songs God gives us are born in places we would never have chosen to walk through.
We would rather skip the waiting. We would rather avoid the miry clay. But when God brings us through those seasons, we discover something about His faithfulness that we could not have learned any other way.
And notice that David’s song did not affect only David.
“Many shall see it, and fear, and shall trust in the LORD.”
God can use what He has brought you through to strengthen someone else who is still waiting.
Your pit may become part of your testimony.
And your testimony may become someone else’s reason to trust God.
Act Today: Think back to a difficult season from which the LORD has brought you. Thank Him specifically for what He taught you there, and look for an opportunity to encourage someone who may still be waiting in their own difficult season.
