Wait Thou Only Upon God

Psalm 62:5–8, “My soul, wait thou only upon God; for my expectation is from Him. He only is my rock and my salvation: He is my defence; I shall not be moved. In God is my salvation and my glory: the rock of my strength, and my refuge, is in God. Trust in Him at all times; ye people, pour out your heart before Him: God is a refuge for us. Selah.”

We spend a great deal of our lives waiting.

Waiting for an answer.

Waiting for a door to open.

Waiting for circumstances to change.

Waiting for something we have prayed about for a very long time.

David says, “My soul, wait thou only upon God.”

That word “only” matters.

David had learned that his expectation could not ultimately rest in people, circumstances, influence, or his own strength.

His expectation was from God.

Then he reminds himself why:
He is my rock.
He is my salvation.
He is my defence.
He is my refuge.

Waiting becomes much harder when our eyes are fixed only on what we are waiting for.

But waiting changes when our attention turns to the One upon whom we are waiting.

And verse 8 gives us something to do while we wait:
“Pour out your heart before him.”

God does not ask us to pretend that waiting is easy. We can tell Him about the frustration, uncertainty, disappointment, and fear.

Pour it out.

Then leave it with the One who is your refuge.

We may not know when the answer will come.

But we know who holds the answer.

Act Today: Tell the LORD honestly what you are waiting for. Pour out your heart before Him, and then remind yourself that your expectation is not ultimately from circumstances—it is from Him.
