1 Peter 2:2, “As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby:”
A baby deprived of nourishment will not only have its growth stunted but will eventually die. Likewise, if a Christian does not feed on God’s Word, he or she will languish spiritually and be of little use to their church, the cause of Christ, and the kingdom of God. “Milk and meat” (today’s verse and 1 Corinthians 3:1-2) are metaphors that describe simple and complex biblical truths. While some truths of Scripture are more difficult and weightier to grasp than others, the fact of the matter is that all Scripture is either milk or meat, depending on your own level of spiritual maturity. Every believer should be continually growing in their depth of understanding. The gospel message which I heard and believed as an eight-year-old is the same gospel message forty-four years later, but my understanding and appreciation of that glorious and profound truth is far greater and deeper than what I understood way back then. Receive God’s Word with the enthusiasm of a starving man enjoying a never-ending meal (Jeremiah 15:16). The spiritual food of Scripture will deliver great satisfaction as well as sustenance.
