God’s Pathway to Success
Joshua 1:8, “This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.”
God has commissioned Joshua to lead Israel into the Promised Land. As Moses’ successor, Joshua faces enormous responsibility. God’s charge is simple and weighty. Be saturated with Scripture. Historically this command anchors leadership and national success in obedient attention and faithful devotion to God’s Word.
When we closely meditate on Scripture, our daily choices are sharpened. We are commanded to dwell on God’s Word so that it will dwell in us. When that is the case, obedience naturally follows, and so does success according to God’s definition. Daily reading has a noticeable effect on our daily conversations and actions. This Old Testament verse looks forward to Romans 12, where we are told to be “transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God” (c.f. Rom. 12:1-2). Only God and His guiding Holy Word can bring about that transformation.
Meditation is both cognitive (knowing Scripture) and volitional (choosing to obey). The promise is practical—Scripture-shaped action produces God’s blessing in relationships, ministry, and moral choices.
Spiritual “prosperity” is faithfulness—your choices reflect God’s rule and yield kingdom fruit, not just later in eternity but now, in this present life. Let’s be focused on this verse this week. Be committed to being faithful to obey God’s commands each day. Pray for the Lord to plant His Word deep in your heart, and make God’s Word the master of your mind, the guide of your lips, and the governor of your deeds. That’s God’s pathway to success.
