The Right Way to Boast
Jeremiah 9:23-24, “Thus saith the LORD, Let not the wise man glory in his wisdom, neither let the mighty man glory in his might, let not the rich man glory in his riches: But let him that glorieth glory in this, that he understandeth and knoweth Me, that I am the LORD which exercise lovingkindness, judgment, and righteousness, in the earth: for in these things I delight, saith the LORD.”
Our worth and security rest not in what we achieve or accumulate but in personally knowing the Lord who delights in steadfast love, justice, and righteousness. We live in a culture bent on showcasing intellect, power, and prosperity, or, if you like, brains, brawn, and bucks. Social media feeds shimmer with curated triumphs, and the heart quietly craves a like, a share, a title, a balance sheet that tells us we matter. The Lord breaks into that fevered chase with a gracious command to stop boasting in fading trophies, and to instead, boast in knowing Him.
Knowing God is more than intellectual agreement with doctrinal truth. This does not suggest that doctrinal truth is unimportant. Instead, this is a declaration that knowing God is a covenant friendship with the Lord as you trust the Father who sent His Son, Jesus, to embody the very love, justice, and righteousness in which He delights. By the way, as a believer, this is the manner in which you are also expected to delight and to walk. At Calvary, steadfast love bore our sin. In the resurrection, justice triumphed. Through the Spirit, righteousness is written on believers’ hearts. Every earthly credential withers beside that glory.
Today, examine where your heart seeks applause. Brains, brawn, and bucks are gifts, but they cannot secure life or mend a soul. Repent of misplaced pride and preach the gospel to yourself. You are only accepted in Christ alone, and this is possible because the King of the universe set His affection on you. Boast there, at the foot of the cross, where human status is leveled and divine delight is freely given.
