The Source of All Authority
Romans 13:1, “Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God.”
God rules the universe without rivals. Powers that seem self-made or hostile still operate under His sovereign hand. Paul does not ask believers to admire every ruler; he calls us to acknowledge that behind every legitimate office stands the Lord who raises up and brings down kings. Our submission is therefore an act of worship. We bow first to Christ, then to the civil structures He ordains, unless they command what He forbids (Acts 5:29). Refusing personal vengeance, paying taxes, and honoring offices demonstrate confidence that Jesus reigns now, not just in some distant kingdom.
Today, consider how your words about leaders—local, national, even workplace supervisors—reflect your faith. Honor does not mean silence about evil; it means criticizing without contempt, praying more than complaining, and trusting that God can steer even ungodly rulers for the good of His people. Let’s … Sovereign Lord, teach me to fear You more than men, and therefore to honor magistrates without idolatry or bitterness. Strengthen persecuted believers whose governments crush them, and grant repentance to those in power. Amen!
Let’s only fear Jesus, the true King, and honor earthly rulers without fearing them.
