Conscience Set Free
Romans 13:5, “Wherefore ye must needs be subject, not only for wrath, but also for conscience sake.”
Christian obedience is not about simply survival. To obey only to avoid punishment is obedience with a shallow motive. Today’s text presses deeper. The cleansed conscience delights to do God’s will. The Holy Spirit writes the law on believers’ hearts, moving us from external compliance to inward joy. This matters when laws feel tedious or taxes tight. Pay what you owe (v. 7), not grudgingly but as free people. Jesus has settled our greatest debt at the cross. This means that lesser debts have lost their sting. Governments may waste money, yet our integrity before God remains priceless.
Is your conscience clear regarding speed limits, expense reports, or piracy of digital content? A forgiven heart should also be an honest one. Where guilt pricks, confess quickly. Christ charges no late fees on grace, but delayed obedience hardens the soul. Let’s thank our Lord for a conscience rubbed clean by the blood of Jesus and ask Him to keep it tender. Where we have excused small rebellions, may we be convicted and led by the Spirit into the liberty of integrity. Amen!
